Olathe Public Schools in Olathe, Kansas, is home to a robust Real World Learning (RWL) program designed to promote Career and Technical Education (CTE) among the district’s five high schools. Those high schools, in conjunction with the Olathe Advanced Technical Center (OATC) and Mill Creek Center, their alternative school, provide nearly 10,000 secondary students with work-based learning opportunities. In 2022, 85% of those students participated in a CTE pathway.

State Superintendent Dr. Christina Grant implemented the program in hopes that she could place students in fields like communications, business management, hospitality, information technology, engineering, architecture, and the health sciences so they could gain on-the-job experience that would guide their college choices and other post-secondary planning.

Lee’s Summit R7 is a large school district serving regions in the Kansas City metro area, encompassing 30 schools and enrolling close to 18,000 students. Lee’s Summit is one of several KC districts to partner with the Kauffman Foundation to support real-world learning initiatives for secondary students.

As a CTE director or school administrator, it’s your job to create, maintain, and scale an engaging and effective work-based learning program for your students.
